Peanut Butter Apple Dog Treats

Homemade Dog Treat Recipe – Peanut Butter Apple

Yummy dog treat alert! These peanut butter apple dog treats are a combination of my doggie’s favorite things –peanut butter, apple, pumpkin, and bacon! What’s best is that this recipe can be whipped up in one bowl and baked right away.

The inspiration for this recipe comes from The Good Book of Southern Baking by Kelly Fields (James Beard award winner and owner of Willa Jean restaurant in New Orleans). She makes her version of these treats for her rescue R.S. Kinney, so I wanted to tweak the biscuits for our rescue, King!

I’ve made plenty of cookies and biscuits before, but never dog biscuits, so it was a fun learning process!

The biggest difference between baking for humans and baking for dogs is that dog treats don’t have to be precise – we don’t have to worry too much about rising agents or texture. So if you’re a novice baker, you totally got this!

Swapping Ingredients

If your pup has allergies or just doesn’t like a certain ingredient, here are some options for replacements!

  • Apple Sauce. The apple sauce contributes moisture, so replacing for ingredients with a similar consistency is fine! I’ll occasionally use mashed banana if I have really ripe ones or canned pumpkin puree because it’s shelf-stable and normally in my pantry!
  • Eggs. These act more like a bonding agent than a rising one in the biscuit, so replacing them with something of similar consistency will work. I’d suggest 1/4 cup of pumpkin puree, unsweetened applesauce or mashed banana.
  • Apple. If you’d like to replace the apple, try other dog-friendly fruits like pear or veggies like grated carrots (preferably grated at home to retain moisture). You can also leave the apple out.
  • Whole Wheat Flour. If you don’t have whole wheat flour, you can use all-purpose or grind up extra rolled oats in a food processor to make oat flour.
  • Bacon. The bacon is totally optional in this recipe, but if you want to show your dog some extra love, the bacon will do the trick. <3

Description

Easy homemade dog treats for your best fur baby! Made with peanut butter, shredded apple, oats, and pumpkin puree, these dog biscuits are my doggie’s favorite treat!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour, plus more for dusting (280 g) (*see notes for alternatives)
  • 3/4 cup rolled oats (70 g)
  • 1 cup grated apple (finely diced) (*see notes for alternatives)
  • 1/4 cup peanut butter (creamy or chunky is fine, depending on what your dog likes! just make sure it’s xylitol-free)
  • 1 cup unsweetened apple sauce, pumpkin puree, or mashed banana
  • 2 eggs, room temperature (*see notes if your dog is allergic)
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 3 strips cooked bacon, chopped (optional – if you want to spoil your pup!)

Instructions

  1. Prep. Preheat oven to 350ºF. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. Mix Biscuit Dough. In a large bowl, mix together all of the ingredients until incorporated. The dough will be pretty stiff and should stick to itself. If you need to adjust the consistency, add more water or flour, one tablespoon at a time.
  3. Roll Dough + Cut Biscuits. Dust your flat work surface and rolling pin with whole wheat flour. Roll out your dough until it’s 1/3″ to 1/4″ thick – I prefer mine thin so they bake faster. Use a cookie cutter lightly dipped in flour to cut the biscuits. Place them on the lined parchment paper about 1/2″ apart (they don’t expand or rise much). Re-roll the scraps and cut biscuits until you run out.
  4. Bake. Bake the biscuits for 30-40 minutes (varies depending on how thick yours are) until stiff to the touch but tender in the midle. The biscuits won’t be overly crisp. Cool them completely before feeding them to your pup! To store, keep them in an airtight container for up to 5 days or in a zip-top bag in the freezer for weeks.

Notes

  • Whole Wheat Flour. If you don’t have whole wheat flour, you can use all-purpose or grind up extra rolled oats in a food processor to make oat flour.
  • Apple. If you’d like to replace the apple, try other dog-friendly fruits like pear or veggies like grated carrots (preferably grated at home to retain moisture). You can also leave the apple out.
  • Apple Sauce. You can also use mashed banana if I have really ripe ones or canned pumpkin puree.
    • Eggs: If your dog is allergic to eggs, you can substitute the 2 eggs with about 1/4 cup more of the pumpkin puree, unsweetened apple sauce, or mashed banana!
    • Bacon. The bacon is totally optional in this recipe, but if you want to show your dog some extra love, the bacon will do the trick. <3
